We realize that for many people coming to church for the first time can be a scary thing. We want to make it as easy and as non-threatening as possible for you. Here is some basic information about what you can expect on your first visit with us at Zion.

Parking and entering the building
Getting around the building
The worship service: What to expect

Zion has a large parking lot to the west behind the church off of 2nd Street. You can enter the parking lot from 2nd or from Vine Street. Street parking is also available on 2nd or Grant Street.

There are three doors through which you can enter the building. Any of them will get you into the worship service easily.

Main entrance to the church
Enter on Grant Street. You will enter into a gathering area. Go to your right to enter the church sanctuary (where the worship service is held). This entrance is handicap accessible and has an automatic door system for easy entry. The button to open the door is to the left as you face the doors. The right door will open when you push the button and will stay open long enough to enter and will close automatically.

North door closest to Grant Street
This entrance will take you up a short flight of stairs into the narthex off of the sanctuary.

Courtyard doors on the east side of parking lot
This also is handicap accessible and has an automatic door system. Push the button on the post to your right. The right door will open. Enter the first set of doors and look for the button on your right. The inside right door will open. Enter the second set of doors and go to the left. The elevator will be on the right as you go down the ramp. The elevator will take you up to the main level and to the balcony where the Organ, Adult Choir and Bell Choirs are.

The sanctuary, where worship services are held, is on the main level of the church building. You can enter the building through any of the three entrances.

Restrooms: The restrooms are located in the Fellowship Hall on the lower level and upstairs on the main level. All restrooms have baby changing tables.

Bible Class and Sunday School: Adult Bible Class is held in the Fellowship Hall on the lower level of the church building. Sunday school classes meet in the lower level of the church at 9:15 am. Enter through the Courtyard doors and there will be someone there to help you.

You can find the service times and differences between the traditional service and the contemporary service on the Worship times page.

The atmosphere in church is reverent but relaxed. You don't have to worry about making a mistake. People will be more than happy to help you if you have a question.

You will receive a worship folder and a Zion Communicator (weekly newsletter) as you enter the sanctuary (where the service is held). Children's bulletins and toddler bags are available for small children. Greeters at the door will be happy to answer any questions you might have.

You can sit anywhere you wish and follow along in the worship folder to know what is going on in the service. The letters LW refer to the blue Lutheran Worship hymnal and the letters BOB refer to the Best of the Best Songbooks in the seat rack. The Pastor or Worship Leader will give directions about sitting or standing at different times during the service.

If you are visiting for the first time you will receive an packet containing information about our church, Sunday School, and Day School. Please fill out one of the cards from the seat rack and put it in the offering plate. Do not feel obligated to give any money if you do not want to. Many church members give monthly rather than weekly, so no one will notice or care whether you give or not. If you do want to give something, there are envelopes in the seat rack in front of you.

One of our worship services (See Worship Times) includes the Lord's Supper (Holy Communion) each week. A statement about our communion practice is found in the service folder. If you prefer not to, you may remain in your seat, no one will think it's odd.

If you have other questions, please feel free to ask anyone you see, or to contact the church (630-323-0384) before you come the first time.
